Born Rolihlahla Mandela, his primary school teacher gave him the name Nelson.

Elected the first black South African president in 1994, this was the first time he got to vote, he was 76.

Nelson soon became the father of the modern South Africa, a symbol of hope and an instrument of peace, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his role in laying the foundations for a democratic South Africa.

He believed sport “has the power to change the world… it has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.”

An appropriate commission in many ways, a man worthy of his legendary status.
